[Tutorial] How to Podcast for Free!

A podcast is nothing more than an audio file, usually in MP3 format, that is accessible by the public or subscribers. It usually takes the form of a radio show, focusing on something current which requires updates or news conveyed in a personal manner. Of course, it does not have to take this form. It could be a series of tutorials, for example.

Podcasts may sound very fancy, and you may think some high-end equipment is needed to create and host one. However, this is not the case. Creating and hosting a podcast requires only a few things:

1. A microphone

2. A computer with an Internet connection

3. Recording software

4. A place to host the audio file

5. A little know-how

Let’s look at each of these in more detail.

Microphone

If you do not have a microphone, you can pick one up very cheaply in computer and office stores. Most people opt for the headset type as a matter of convenience.

A Computer with an Internet Connection

If you are reading this article you probably already have a PC and a connection to the Internet! If not, you can create a solo broadcast without a connection. These days you can also use portable devices to record podcasts too.

Recording Software

Audacity is the most popular software for recording podcasts. It works on both PCs and Macs, and it is free. You can download Audacity at audacity.sourceforge.net. You will also need to download the LAME MP3 Encoder via the link on that site (more on that below).

A Place to Host the Audio File

You can either upload the podcast audio file to your own website, or get it hosted on one owned by someone else. Some sites exist to host podcasts, though check the terms and conditions first.
