How to use the “new Facebook”? SmartLists, Ticker, BlueIcon, Subscriptions etc.
FBians (FaceBook users) who are so glued to the Facebook, are awakening to surprise changes each day. Only few days back, we had the Smartlists feature introduced. By the time we’re playing with it intuitively and getting accustomed to it, Mark Zuckerburg said to release more updates. This time the updates come in the form of BlueIcon to mark your news feed items, top stories or not. There is also a ticker box on the right hand side, where you get instant messages like twitter. You can subscribe to other updates, notifications, photos etc without becoming a friend.
Default Look of Facebook
Coming to the look of the Facebook itself it has changed a little. Previously the Profile button, Home button and some other extras are changed to a simple Name and Home button style. When you click your Name, you will be displayed your Profile or Wall etc
Update: 29th Sep, 2011
After you login into Facebook, the default look has more slightly changed. Now there is one more button or option added to the top right hand side corner, beside the search bar in Facebook. You’ve the Find Friends option in addition to the two buttons already present.
SmartLists or FriendLists
Till now, all the news feeds were coming in a flow, and there was no way to separate the news feeds from your college buddies to best friends. You need to keep searching through the whole bunch for your required friend buddy’s news feed. Now you have smartlists where FB automatically creates lists based upon college, education, place of living etc.
You have some default smartlists for everyone like Close Friends, Acquaintances, Family, Restricted. Some additional smartlists are created by Facebook like with your college name, your company name etc. which cannot be deleted. But these lists can be hidden or added to Favorites. Use the pencil icon next to the list name.
Now you can keep adding friends to each list, so that you can see the notifications, photos, videos, gossips only from that particular list. You can also update your status, only to public, friends or any of the lists.
Facebook, very recently introduced this feature, so that you can see all the top stories from the last hour at the top and beneath it, you can see the recent stories. You have the option of making any post “blue” so that FB can bring in more stories like that. You can also remove the “blue” icon, in case you don’t like that kind of stories to be at the top.
Subscriptions & Subscribers
Facebook also has bought a convenient way of subscribing to updates of celebrities and other friends, whom you don’t like to friend or not possible to be-friend. In that case, if the FB profile page has a SUBSCRIBE button, you can subscribe to their updates, provided the owner of the page allowed all subscription updates.
Here, “Karri Avinash” is subscribing to my page “Palla Sridhar” without becoming a friend of mine. This is like obtaining the RSS feed of tweets of twitters, whom you don’t like to follow.
