VNC Viewer for iPhone : Screens, RealVNC, TeamViewer etc

VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing, which is a graphical desktop sharing that uses the RFB protocol to remotely control another computer. It transmits the keyboard and mouse events from one computer to another, relaying the graphical screen updates back to and fro, over a network.

A VNC system consists of a client, a server, and a communication protocol.

  • The VNC server is the program on the machine that shares its screen. The server passively allows the client to take control of it.
  • The VNC viewer or client is the program that watches, controls, and interacts with the server. The client controls the server.
  • The VNC protocol (RFB) is very simple, based on one graphic primitive from server to client ("Put a rectangle of pixel data at the specified X,Y position") and event messages from client to server.
  • So coming to iPhone, there are many VNC apps, all varying in price, features and approach. Screens is an VNC viewer for iPhone which offers a secure connection through SSH tunnelling, and provides a setup-free option, in case you don’t want to mess around with your router. The app cost is just $20.

The current version is 1.4.1. It requires iOS 3.1 or later. You can run applications, change settings, and access data exactly as you would be permitted to do were you sitting in front of it, and using the keyboard and mouse.

TeamViewer which relies on the VNC protocol, uses the central servers to keep track of which computers/devices are connected. It’s absolutely and completely free. It can keep track of multiple “partners” through a single login/password. “TeamViewer” app allows fast switching between multiple monitors on computers running “Host” app. But some drawbacks like, sometimes not connecting on first try and non-intuitive interface on mobile app when using smaller screen make this VNC viewer a non-primary target.
