Download Gmail to multiple POP clients like Outlook 2007, 2010, Office 365 : Use Recent Mode
These days the communication devices are unlimited. You have PCs, laptops, mobiles, tablet etc. So if you’re working on different systems like PC at home, iPhone on the road, laptop in the Office, iPad for fun, and want to download your standard mail like Gmail using POP clients to these devices, it becomes a headache.
Though now-a-days, the subscription services of Cloud power have come to the rescue. But if you’re still someone like me, using desktop apps and dual OS you are in trouble downloading Gmail to POP clients like Outlook. I recently subscribed to Office 365, have Outlook 2007 on XP, Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 and want to download Gmail from the same account to all these POP clients, you need to do some changes to the standard configuration of Gmail with these POP clients.
You can refer to the standard configuration instructions to configure your first POP client. You can get the instructions on the Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP page. Click on the Configuration Instructions link.
After that, if you want do download Gmail for offline use and use with another POP client, you have to use “recent mode”. The instructions are on this Gmail Help page. The screenshot for Outlook 2007, which is my 2nd POP client used with the same Gmail account, can be seen below. The first POP client I used to sync mail in Office 365 Outlook.
When you come to this page, in the “User Name” field enter “recent: firstname.lastname@example.org” and click More Settings and set this setting in the Advanced pane.
You need to enable the setting, “Leave a copy of messages on the server”.
Now when you use this “recent mode”, mail from the last 30 days will be downloaded to your POP3 client. But for the first client, it’ll be according to your Gmail settings.
As you can see in the above screenshots, I’m able to sync my Gmail e-mails with Office 365 and also Outlook 2007 on XP. You can extend this to Outlook 2010 if you have on Windows 7. If you don’t use recent mode, you’ll not be able sync your emails with your 2nd POP client onwards!
