iPhone 4 Reception: Problem & Solution

The Apple iPhone introduced on June 23, 2010 by Steve Jobs, is claimed to be having 100 new features.  The high feature rich set of iPhone 4 obtained by questionable circumstances, include, stainless steel casing, all glass front and a thinnest smartphone on the planet, which is likely to 25% thinner than iPhone 3GS. iPhone 4 will have volume controls on the side along with an accessible microSIM tray. The iPhone 4 features a front-facing camera, and the back sports a microphone, 30pin connector for docking, and a speaker, while the top sports a second microphone for noise cancellation, sleep/wake button, and a headset input.

The Problem:

The problem seems to occur when the iPhone 4 is held in the left hand, with the palm covering the lower left part of the stainless steel band that houses some of the antennae. Users have reported seeing the number of signal bars drop dramatically when the device is held that way, although the problem does not affect everyone. These problems can better be seen in these videos.

Reason

“Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas,” said Apple in a statement. “This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.”

Solution

Apple has issued a range of ‘bumpers’ – coloured bands of rubber and moulded plastic – that clip over the stainless steel band on the iPhone 4, ostensibly to help protect the device from knocks and bumps. The company said these cases could also help maintain signal strength, by preventing the palm of the hand from directly touching the antennae. The bumpers, which cost around £25 and are available in a range of colours, will not be shipped until at least July 16, according to the Apple website.

iPhone 4 went on sale Thursday amid reports of product shortages and long lines at Apple stores and iPhone retailers Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Radio Shack. iPhone 4 features a number of enhancements over its predecessor, the iPhone 3GS, including higher screen resolution (960 x 640 pixel technology dubbed Retina Display), a front-facing camera for video chats, and a longer lasting battery that affords 40% more talk time. It’s also 24% thinner. iPhone 4 also includes a 3-axis gyro and a slick new glass and stainless steel case—and it’s capable of multitasking thanks to the new iOS 4 operating system. "iPhone 4 is the biggest leap since the original iPhone," Apple CEO Steve Jobs proclaimed as he unveiled the product on June 7 at an Apple event in San Francisco.
