uTorrent 1.8.2: Optimum Speed

These days, many internet users either download files using torrents or from file sharing hosts. Users use download managers or browsers simply to download from file hosting services. But for torrents, you need to have a good Bit Torrent client. uTorrent is one of the best Bit Torrent clients that I have experienced. Though I tried only Bit Lord before, this seems to be very light and fast. On my system, which has a Pentium D 2.66 Ghz processor with 1.5 GB ram, it seems to work very well. It was taking only 7 MB ram, while the torrents were downloading and only 2-3% of CPU. At present there is a 1.8.3 build for this client. But as i experienced this newer version does not support full download speed. I checked the DHT nodes for 1.8.3 version and 1.8.2 version.  The old version seems to update more nodes ( 300+) whereas the newer version only 40+ nodes. So try 1.8.3  and if you have any download speed problems revert to 1.8.2

Now the main theme of this post, how to optimize the speed for uTorrent. As for any download manager or torrent clients, it is not possible to obtain speeds greater than those allowed by your ISP, so searching vaguely the web to increase the Internet speed or Bit Torrent client speeds is time-wasting. Test your Internet speed connection and if you don’t get what your ISP says, then please contact your ISP provider. Also I heard that in some countries, the Bit Torrent speed is throttled.

So now if you want to get the optimum speed for your Bit Torrent client uTorrent , these are the suggestions i followed. My internet connection speed is 192 kbps and download speed of 24 Kbps. By optimizing this way, i was able to get average speed of 18 Kbps.

  1. Go to Options —-> Preferences.
  2. On the left hand side, click on Connection.
  3. On the right hand side, you get different options for this tab. Just keep the Windows Firewall Exception checked and un-check the remaining options. (if you don’t have router, like me). If you have, just keep the default options.
  4. Similarly change the options for Bandwidth and Bit Torrent tabs, on the left hand side as shows in the screen shots.

IMP: For the Bit Torrent tab, under Protocol Encryption, choose Enabled for Outgoing, and check the Allow incoming legacy… check box.

For Queuing options, you can increase the maximum number of active torrents and active downloads, if your ISP speed is high or accept default values for low ISP speeds.

Before following these steps, my torrent download speed was 7-8 Kbps, but after these it rose to 17-19 Kbps, keeping in mind that my max. download speed is 24 Kbps.
